I haven’t updated my bird count in a long time but I have still been taking photographs of birds. Here are the ones I’ve taken lately. I’m going to need to get busy if I want to beat last year’s total.
January 1st is the beginning of a new year and the beginning of a new bird count. I keep track of the birds I’ve seen and photographed in the year. Today I began my count by photographing 8 birds. Last year I ended with only 45 birds but I hope to do much better this year. The birds I saw today are:
Bird #57 for the year is the Black-and-white Warbler. We were taking a walk through the Olmsted Woods at the National Cathedral when I saw this bird and was so excited to snap some pictures of it. I was excited because it makes bird #57 for the year which passes my total for last year of 56. Yay!
This morning I went to Riverbend Park to do some more bird watching. As with other recent park visits, I saw lots and lots of birds I’ve already photographed. I did see two warblers that I’d not seen or photographed before. After doing some research to find out what birds they were, I found that they are both warblers who are migrating north and stop in the park on their way. The new birds are:
Early this morning I went to Ellanor Lawrence Park to look for more new birds. The place was very busy with birds flying all around. So many of them I’ve photographed already this year but I was able to capture 4 new birds to add to the list. I’m now up to 39 birds for 2014. The new birds are:
Today I took advantage of being on spring break to go bird watching. I went to Huntley Meadows Park to find some new birds. I was very lucky today and captured 8 new birds on camera. A few were completely new while others I’ve photographed in previous years. The new birds are:
This morning I took another walk along the Glover Archbold Trail in DC. I was SO excited to photograph two new birds. I’m now up to 27 for 2014. I know as it gets warmer I’ll be adding more and more birds as I am able to get out more and look for new birds.

With a new year comes a new bird count. I start over each year counting the birds I photographed each year. In 2012 I photographed 33 birds. In 2013 I photographed 59 birds. I hope this year I photograph many more new birds. I started out yesterday with a hike with Warren and I saw a good handful of birds but only got three decent photos of birds. So the count begins.
Today we had our first measurable snow in the last few years. We got about 2 inches of snow. I took a picture from my balcony in the middle of the storm. I also saw a house finch visiting the bird feeder. I’m glad I had the day off!
On this episode I talk about spending Memorial Day weekend at my father’s in Charlottesville, wineries we visited, birds I saw, and my birthday coming up tomorrow. Leave me a birthday comment! Leave a comment or call 202-709-3029 to leave a voicemail.
