On this date in 1848, Paul Gauguin was born. He is considered one of the leading painters of the Postimpressionist period. During his career he was influenced by van Gogh, Seurat, and Degas. He worked for a short time with Vincent van Gogh. Later in his life he retreated to the South Pacific where he eventually died of a heart attack in 1904 after a bout with drug addition.
