Labor Day Weekend Birds

I spent the weekend in Charlottesville visiting my father and wineries. I had my eyes open for new birds and actually saw and photographed some. Here’s what I saw:

Carolina Wren

Male and Female Eastern Bluebirds

Red Headed Woodpecker – It’s very hard to see in the picture but it’s at the top of the tree. An unknown bird is a bit farther down in the tree. I have no idea what it is and you can barely see it anyway. I have got to get a better lens!

When I got home today I was watching for birds again and saw a Carolina Chickadee!

House Sparrow

A house sparrow (or what I think is a house sparrow) found my bird feeder and I was able to capture it with my camera. This IS a house sparrow, right?

Update: After some more research, I find out that this is a juvenile finch. Even better!

New Bird

Last week I put up a bird feeder on my balcony. As far as I can tell, the birds have not found it. However, I do see lots of different birds from my balcony. I know most of them but every once in awhile I see one that I don’t know. For example, the one below showed up today and I don’t know what kind of bird it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update! I have found out that it’s a female Downy Woodpecker!

Pretty Bird

Yesterday the boyfriend and I went to a few wineries with the boyfriend’s sister, her husband, and their son. At one winery they had this bird feeder right outside the window. Lots of pretty birds were stopping to eat the bird seed. I saw this cardinal and wondered if that meant spring would soon be here. With all the snow on the ground that may not be true. Either way, the birds were beautiful and I loved seeing them getting something to eat.
