Today is my older sister’s birthday. Since I’m in Knoxville and most of my family is here, we decided to go out to dinner to celebrate her birthday. My brother in law took us in his boat to the restaurant. It was fun riding in the boat. We had a good time getting there. It felt good to be with everyone and share memories of mom and celebrate my sister. Makes me wonder if we’ll stay in touch and get together in the future. Mom always worried that we wouldn’t get together when she died. We’ll have to work hard to make sure we all stay in touch.

Talking To My Mother
Here is another in the series of me talking with my mother. In this video she talks about the depression, the cars she’s owned, and parenting skills.
Talking With Mom
Today I went to my mom’s house to do lots of little chores she needs help with. I was being a good son. While there I took my camera with the new mic on top and recorded a short video. This short video is the kind of thing I want to do that I was talking about in my last video. Next time I’ll shoot in HD and add titles and such. This is just a test. Enjoy!
Christmas Day
Yesterday my mother and I went to my sister’s house to celebrate Christmas with a few other members of my family. We have a huge family. When we are all together there are 24 of us. And that’s just my parents, brothers and sisters, spouses and children. Trying to coordinate everyone to get together is a nightmare. Because of that we rarely all get together. This time there was just a third of us.
My mother and sisters cooked an amazing meal of both turkey and ham. And of course all the sides. We had a great time chatting at dinner talking about previous Christmases, what everyone’s up to, and several other topics. You should always avoid politics and religion when visiting with family members. I was very good not to bring up either of those topics. One of my brother’s in law did. He kept complaining about Obamacare and how much he’s going to have to pay for insurance. I wanted to say so many things but I kept my mouth shut. As much as I love my sister, she married a man who isn’t very smart. But anyway, we did have fun chatting at dinner.
After dinner we moved the festivities to the basement. My sister has a huge tree decorated beautifully for the holiday. We all handed out gifts and sat around and opened them. One of my brothers gave my father a new cell phone…one with large numbers so he can see them better. We were all trying to show him how to use it. Each time he held the phone for a test call, his hand rested on the volume switch and kept turning it down. He said he couldn’t hear anything. We tried to explain to him that if he holds it a certain way, it will turn down the volume and he won’t hear the call. I think he got it in the end but you know how old people and technology don’t get along all that well.
After awhile everyone decided it was time for dessert. There was something for everyone. There were pies, cake, ice cream, cookies, fudge, and of course candy. I had a big piece of chocolate cake. It was delicious. My sister has three dogs and a cat. All the dogs were constantly around us as we eat looking for bits that might fall on the floor.
After gifts and dessert we went back upstairs to the dinning room table to play games. My sister brought her Rummikub game with her. I guess that’s the latest game everyone is playing. I had heard my mother talk about playing it with her retirement group but I’d never actually played the game before. I watched my sisters, nephew, and mom play one round and then with a little instruction, I joined in the fun. I won the first game I played! I picked it up pretty fast. I won another round as well. Even after my one sister and her family left to return to Richmond, the rest of us continued to play. I won 5 games over the evening. It was a fun! Have you played Rummikub before?
We spent the night at my sisters house because we didn’t want to have to drive the two hours to get home on Christmas. This morning we got up early and got on road. We stopped at Denny’s on the way home for breakfast. It was good, but filling. I’ve eaten way too much for the last two days. I had a great time visiting with my family. Even though I’m not religious, I do enjoy this holiday for getting to spend time with my family. It’s tough getting together with many of them during the year. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas as well!
Christmas Eve
Merry Christmas eve! I love this time of the year. The holidays always put me in a good mood. And the weather is cooperating to make it feel like it’s Christmas. It was very warm over the weekend but after all day rain on Monday the temperatures dropped and today I saw a burst of snowflakes at one point. It’s breezy and cold outside. Just in time for Christmas.
Over the weekend we exchanged gifts since Warren is in New Orleans with his family. He gave me a new coat, sunglasses, an Apple gift card, a Virginia Bird Guide, and a few other stocking stuffers in my stocking. I gave him a new duffle bag, baking pans, slippers, boot socks, and a few stocking stuffers. We had a very nice gift exchange.
Tomorrow I’ll be heading to the Charlottesville area to spend the day with two of my sisters and their families and my father. I’m taking my mother with me. We started this tradition last year and we’ll probably continue doing it as long as we can. Mom and I spend the night at my sisters so we don’t have to drive so far in one day. That makes the trip more enjoyable since we can spend more time with the family. It should be fun. I’m looking forward to it.
I been watching my favorite Christmas movies while I’ve been off from work. I’ve watched The Bishop’s Wife, Christmas In Connecticut, A Christmas Carol, The Shop Around The Corner, The Man Who Came To Dinner, and Meet Me In St. Louis. My favorite is probably a toss up between The Bishop’s Wife and Christmas In Connecticut.
Even though this is a Christmas post, I did just want to mention a few news items. I know everyone is posting about and reading about the Duck Dynasty controversy. I will only chime in and say that he has a right to speak as he wishes. This is not a “right to free speech” issue. The whole duck dynasty needs to understand that consequences come with with what you say. He’s an idiot with backward thinking. That’s all I’m going to say on the subject.
The other issue I’m so pleased about is what’s happening in Utah. U.S. District Judge Robert J. Shelby on Friday declared Utah’s gay marriage ban unconstitutional. Since then some 700 couples have been married. Of course the state lawyers are asking for a stay to holt the weddings. I think they are screwed and will not win this one and Utah will be the 18th state with marriage equality. On this topic in general, I think taking it to the courts is the best way to get marriage equality state by state and eventually the country.
Enough of all that. Have a wonderful Christmas!
