Winter seems to have come a bit early this year. Yesterday we saw all kinds of weather. It started with snow. It snowed about 1 ½ inches. Then it transitioned over to sleet and freezing rain. And finally rain. Then over night the freezing rain picked up again. Everything got coated with a ¼ inch of ice.
I got the word early last evening I wouldn’t have to work today. So I planned on sleeping late today. Of course I woke up at my regular time. As I usually do, I looked at the clock. But the clock wasn’t lit with the time. It was also very quiet. I then realized the power was out. I got up and looked outside and sure enough the power was out as far as I could see and everything was coated with shiny, thick ice. Instantly I start thinking of all the things I need to do and how I won’t be able to get online and be connected. I’ve become so accustomed to having a connection that I take it for granted and miss it when it’s gone. I decided to just go back to sleep. But I couldn’t. I was thinking of all the things I needed to do today.
After 45 minutes of laying in bed, I decided to get up and do something. I made the plan to get going, clean off my car, and get some things done. The temperature was slowly rising and the roads had been treated. It was just a matter of getting the ice off my car and getting out of my parking lot. Once I got outside to my car it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. I started my car and got the heat going and within a few minutes I had it all cleaned off. I was very careful getting out of my parking lot and once I got on a main road, it was fine. I ran my errands and was back at my house within a few hours.
Then I sat down to rest after walking up seven flights of stairs. I decided to call my mom and see what she was doing. She had power and wasn’t do anything. I asked if I could spend the day with her since I didn’t have power and she was so happy that I was coming over. So I spent most of the day at her house watching TV and doing little jobs for her. In the afternoon I took a walk around the grounds of her condo building and took some photos of the ice on the trees. It was so beautiful. After that I called my building and found out the power had been on for a few hours. It was fun hanging out with my mom but I was ready to go home. Tomorrow they are calling for 3 to 5 inches of snow. I guess I’ll have another day off but this time I have plenty of things to do at home.
